Similarity Is a Bad Guide to Counterfactual Truth

چکیده
A. The most popular theory of how to evaluate counterfactuals is to use the LewisStalnaker logic together with some reasonably tractable refinement of our ordinary notions of similarity. This approach is misguided because for some ordinary counterfactuals, irrelevant possible worlds end up determining the counterfactuals’ truth values. This undermines some of the support for the Lewis-Stalnaker logic, e.g. the failure of antecedentstrengthening.

Counterfactual Reasoning Based on Revising Assumptions
We present a semantics for counterfactual implication relative to positive programs with integrity constraints and protected rules (unrevisable). A counterfactual truth evaluation is presented based on Contradiction Removal Semantics. We show the adequacy of C RS to deene the notion of similarity needed for deening counterfactual truth. The concepts introduced by C RS are adequate to support th...

A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...

We argue that a semantics for counterfactual conditionals in terms of comparative overall similarity faces a formal limitation due to Arrow’s impossibility theorem from social choice theory. According to Lewis’s account, the truth-conditions for counterfactual conditionals are given in terms of the comparative overall similarity between possible worlds, which is in turn determined by various as...
متن کاملA comparative investigation of clients\' attitudes toward breaking bad news to patients with cancer
Background: Truth disclosure is one of the major challenges for physicians with cancer patients. The attitude toward breaking news adopted by individuals depends on their cultural background. The present study was conducted at Ardabil University of Medical sciences, Ardabil, Iran, to investigate the attitudes of Turkish-speaking patients with cancer and their families to the disclosure of bad n...
